Mono VirusMononucleosis is a condition that is caused by the mono virus or the Epstein Barr virus. This infection is marked by some symptoms like sore throat, fever, weakness, fatigue, night sweats, and loss of appetite and swelling of glands in the neck or the armpits. Among child this virus tends to cause symptoms that are relatively milder and the symptoms in adolescents and adults are severe. The mono virus is not spread easily like common cold or other viruses. This virus is largely found in the mucus and saliva of individuals and it is passed from an infected person through kissing. This is the reason mono disease is also called the kissing disease. This virus can also spread through exposure to infected particles suspended in the air through sneezing or coughing. Sharing of utensils with a person infected with this condition can also result in mononucleosis. The signs following infection from the mono virus take around 4 to 6 weeks to develop. This infection is common among individuals belonging to the age group of 15 to 35 years. Most individuals tend to get infected with this virus in their lifetime but in 95% of the cases antibodies against the virus are produced and these antibodies protect the individuals against invading viruses and bacteria. The mono virus is detected through identification of the symptoms. Along with this a blood test may be done for confirmation of the diagnosis. A test that is commonly used to diagnose this condition includes the monospot test. This condition can be treated through medicines directed towards treating the symptoms. The mono virus like other viral infections resolves naturally and so the use of anti viral medication does not prove to be effective. Some complications associated with this virus and condition include spleen enlargement. Rest is extremely important for recovering from this virus. The fever and pain can be treated with acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Contact sports should be avoided as it can result in the spleen rupturing. People can carry mono virus and not have any symptoms associated with this condition. This infection normally resolves in around 2 to 4 weeks. Some individuals may feel more tired for several weeks. It is not exactly known for how long the virus stays contagious once the symptoms are resolved. However it is believed that the infection can be spread several months after the symptoms are resolved. |
